How to Size an Orthopedic Dog Bed for Your Dog

The right bed should fit the way your dog actually sleeps. Use measurements as a starting point, then compare them with the bed’s usable sleeping surface.

Measure your dog in a relaxed position

Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while your dog is standing naturally. Then observe the dog lying in a normal sleeping posture, including when they stretch out. Do not force a stiff or uncomfortable dog into a position just to get a measurement.

Compare the usable sleeping area

Product dimensions can include bolsters, raised rims and other parts that reduce the flat area available for sleeping. Check the interior sleeping surface as well as the overall outside dimensions. A bed that looks large from the outside may have a smaller usable centre once the bolsters are accounted for.

Allow room to change position

A dog that curls tightly may prefer a different shape from a dog that stretches out. The bed should allow the dog to turn, settle and extend their legs without hanging over the edge. If two sizes are close, compare the actual interior dimensions and the height of the sides rather than relying only on a small, medium or large label.

Consider access and stability

A very tall mattress can be difficult for a dog with limited mobility to step onto. A low-entry design may be easier, but it should not collapse or slide. Check whether the bed has a non-slip bottom and whether the floor underneath is smooth. Add a stable, washable floor mat nearby if needed, without creating a new trip edge.

Sizing checklist

  • Measure nose to tail and observe the dog’s relaxed sleeping footprint.
  • Check the interior sleeping area, not just the outer dimensions.
  • Compare bed height and side-wall height with your dog’s ability to step in.
  • Check weight guidance and mattress construction.
  • Review return policies in case the first size is not a good fit.
Remember: Product specifications and care instructions vary. Confirm details with the manufacturer, and ask a veterinarian about health or mobility concerns.
